The reputable UK manufactures are sticking to double glazing however their are a few manufactures in Europe making triple glazing.
It is claimed triple glazing improves the sound reduction and heat retention however evidence that backs up these claims are rather scarce. The recognised standard for glazing products is a BBA certificate issued by the UK’s leading testing authority, so far I have been unable to find a triple glazed unit that has had any recognized testing for sound reduction.
With regard to heat loss the best quality UK double glazed unit have an A rating which basically means the heat they gain from sunlight balances out the heat you lose from your home. In some cases there are a few A rated windows that actually have a positive figure which means that they gain more heat than they lose.
As it stands at the moment there is no evidence to back up the claims about triple glazed windows therefore double glazed units are still the preferred option by the most reputable manufactures.
Given A rated windows are already highly efficient and different glazing options on double glazed units can be selected to reduce any level of noise it is safe to say the additional cost of triple glazing is not value for money in the UK unless they can offer some radically different benefit such as generating electricity which is not likely to happen in the foreseeable future.
Other issues to consider with triple glazing are problems with distortion of your view and a greater potential for more to go wrong given the additional weight put the hinges.
PS Update it is with concern that I have recently spoken to two couples who thought they had purchased triple glazing and only had double glazing installed; Neither received a written quotation in writing and neither received a guarantee therefore were unable to go to the consumer and trading standards department to complain! If you decide to buying triple glazing be very, very careful as there are a few cowboys about that are deliberately scamming people…
