When should you buy cheap double glazing?

You should only ever consider buying cheap double glazing if you can not afford better quality double glazing or do not intent to have the property for more than a few years.

The reality of cheap double glazing is it is much more likely to fail as it is highly unlikely it will have steel reinforcement which stops the frames buckling and blowing the glass sealed units.

Another consideration is you can be assured that the locks and handles are of very poor quality and is likely to rust, bend or sheer.

The PVC will most likely be recycled and will either turn pink or a rather nasty nicotine yellow colour.

Factor in poor quality workmanship as the fitters will be getting paid peanuts to fit your windows and the fact the supplier who sells on price is much more likely to go bust.

Over 200+ home improvement companies a month are currently going bust in this recession therefore there is a lot of worthless guarantees and failed products in the market place.

If you are forced to buy the cheapest make sure you do the following:-

1. Pay the deposit by credit card to protect your deposit.
2. Us a home improvement loan such as Barclays or Hitachi as this gives you 3rd party coverage for your guarantee that is protected by the Consumer Credit Act.
3. Do not part with your final balance or sign a satisfaction note until you are happy with the installation.
4. Ask to see a domestic installation that is as old as the guarantee offered.
5. Get 3 quotes and review what is being offered before you decide on a company you can trust.

If in doubt, delay the purchase until you can afford a better quality product, the top end of the market may well be 3 times more expensive but is more likely to last 5 times longer therefore is better value for money if you plan to stay in your house for 20 to 25 years.
